A Commitment to Corporate Citizenship

Cadmus works with private clients on projects to promote corporate social responsibility, and we take very seriously our responsibilities as a good corporate citizen. We are committed to improving the communities in which we live and work by participating in programs and organizations such as these.

Best Workplace for Commuters

Since 2004, Cadmus has been proud to be among the 1 percent of U.S. businesses known as Best Workplaces for Commuters, thanks to the subsidies for mass transit passes and other commuter benefits available to our employee-owners. By partnering with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in this voluntary program, Cadmus is helping to reduce traffic, cut traffic-related pollution, and improve the quality of life for our employee-owners.

Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR®

Cadmus is a Pledge Driver for the annual Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR campaign sponsored by EPA.  Cadmus’ goal for the new 2008-2009 campaign is to prevent 779,700 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging our employees, friends, and families to look for the ENERGY STAR on new purchases and implement energy-efficient practices at home and at work. Cadmus has been a pledge driver for EPA’s flagship campaign for 3 years in a row.

In the past two years, Cadmus has inspired over 330 individuals to pledge to change over 1,700 bulbs to models that have earned the ENERGY STAR. This has prevented over 703,885 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, and saved over $45,000 in energy costs.  We continue to encourage the Cadmus community to adopt energy-efficient practices wherever they can. By saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we can all make a difference in the fight against global warming.

Green Power Partnership

As a member of EPA’s Green Power Partnership, Cadmus buys a significant portion of the electricity we use from renewable sources. Our participation in this important effort is helping the program achieve its goals of promoting the growth of the green power market by reducing the cost and increasing the value of green power. A strong green power market will support new, clean technologies that will reduce the environmental impact of electricity generation now and for years to come.

Clean Energy Choice® Program

Joining this program enabled Cadmus to bring renewable energy benefits to the town of Watertown, MA, where the company’s headquarters is located. The Clean Energy Choice program matches the value of our renewable energy purchase in a contribution to the town. That money can be used for such renewable energy projects as installing photovoltaic cells or establishing a renewable energy education program. The Clean Energy Choice program is a project of the Renewable Energy Trust at the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), a Cadmus client since 2002.

Charles River Watershed Association and the Newton Marasco Foundation

Cadmus has formed strategic partnerships with these two organizations and provides financial support for specific activities. The Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) is active in the Boston, MA, area that is home to Cadmus Headquarters. Founded in 1965, CRWA is one of the nation’s first watershed organizations. It is dedicated to using science, advocacy, and the law to protect the 80-mile-long Charles River and its 308-square-mile watershed. CRWA’s projects involve water law, regulation, and policy; watershed management; sustainable land use planning; water quality; fisheries and habitat; and education, outreach, and technical assistance.

The Newton Marasco Foundation (NMF) is a national organization dedicated to inspiring responsible environmental stewardship. It is involved in a number of education programs in the Greater Washington Metro Area—where we have a major office—including scholarships and internships, an Earth Day Photo Contest and a GreenFocus – Brownfields photo contest (both throughout Maryland). NMF’s annual Green Earth Book Award acknowledges authors who write and educate about the environment for school-age children.

Employee-Directed Charitable Giving Committee

The Cadmus employee-directed charitable giving program was launched in July 2006 so our employee-owners could be directly involved in deciding how and where Cadmus provides charitable support. The committee meets quarterly to consider staff recommendations for charities and non-profit organizations to receive one-time contributions from the company. Through careful consideration of all proposals received, the committee works to reflect the wide-ranging interests and values of Cadmus employee-owners. Past recipients include a local agricultural and arts festival, an organization that provides education opportunities for girls in South Sudan, and organizations that raise funds for research into diseases such as multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

EPA Mentor-Protégé Program

For a number of years, Cadmus has participated in this program, which seeks to increase the participation of small disadvantaged and woman-owned businesses in work for EPA. We work closely with qualified firms to promote their economic stability and help them develop the technical, administrative, and managerial expertise to compete successfully for EPA contracts. Our work with these businesses also helps EPA meet its goals for obtaining services from small disadvantaged and woman-owned businesses.

Metco Program

Funded largely by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Metco program promotes racial integration and educational opportunity for approximately 3,300 students in Boston and Springfield schools, as well as thousands of students in the Metco-receiving school districts. It was started in the 1960s to provide enhanced educational opportunities for urban minority students, to help integrate suburban school districts, and to reduce segregation in city schools. Cadmus makes an annual contribution to Metco in support of the program’s important work.

EnvironMentor

Staff members in our Arlington, Virginia, office participate in this program by volunteering to work, free of charge, with disadvantaged high school students in the District of Columbia throughout the school year. The program’s goal is to help the students develop not only a science project that has an environmental focus but also a great relationship with their mentors that will lead to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the environment. Each May, participating students present their projects to elementary school classes in the District and to a team of judges at the annual EnvironMentors Fair. Students who excel in the program and pursue environmental science studies in college receive scholarships.

Partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation

Cadmus has partnered with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation to maintain a small parcel of public land opposite company headquarters. Staff members mow the area, keep it free of litter, and mulch and otherwise maintain the trees there, following the advice of an arborist they consulted. The mowing helps improve motorists’ visibility as they approach a tricky intersection.  Staff members also worked with the local electric utility to close an open trench on the property that contained power lines. A picnic table placed on the site gives staff members and members of the public a shady place to have lunch.

Individual Acts

We encourage our staff members to volunteer their time to help charitable organizations and to do other good works. They have, for example, helped raise money for girls' educational programs in Afghanistan and Africa for several years by purchasing holiday cards offered by the New England Womens' Initiative. They also collect and donate coats and food for homeless shelters during the holiday season. One staff member, at her own expense, erected a warming sign and fenced off an area along the Charles River across from company headquarters to protect a turtle nest and the eggs it contained. Many other individual employee-owners are involved on their own in efforts to improve their communities and the world beyond their doors.
