Environmentally Sound Design and Management Technical Assistance
Cadmus professionals provide an array of technical assistance to public- and private-sector organizations concerned with the design and management of environmentally sound projects. For example:
- Cadmus develops extensive guidance documents and other materials on the best-practice application of USAID’s environmental procedures to strengthen the environmental review, management, and monitoring capacity of USAID missions, contractors, grant recipients, and host country collaborators in Africa. One example of this work is the USAID Environmental Procedures Training Manual, copies of which can be downloaded from http://www.encapafrica.org/eptm.htm.
- We were the lead developer for the second edition of the Environmental Guidelines for Small-Scale Activities in Africa, USAID’s primary guide to environmentally sound design and management of common sectoral development activities. The document includes several chapters on extractive industries and natural resource management, as well as a fact sheet on cleaner production techniques for small-scale mining initiatives. (Copies of the guidelines are available at http://www.encapafrica.org/egssaa.htm.)
- Several Cadmus staff members have worked with mining operations around the world to evaluate the status of community and environmental programs. These staff members have extensive experience providing technical assistance to the international mining industry to improve environmental management practices, environmental risk assessment, community outreach, and mine worker health and safety.
- Staff members coordinated the organization of a Civil Society Forum where environmental nongovernmental organizations representing civil society in the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) discussed the development of a strategy for ASEAN-civil society collaboration to achieve environmentally sound and sustainable development in the region.
