Host Country Capacity Building and Governance

Cadmus works with the environmental management agencies of developing and transitional countries to improve the effectiveness and financial sustainability of their environmental impact assessment (EIA) systems. For example, we:

• Led a team of experts from Mali and other countries that worked closely with senior leaders of Mali’s Ministry of Environment to develop recommendations to improve the effectiveness of Mali’s EIA system and to provide more sustainable funding for environmental management activities.
• Assisted Uganda’s National Environmental Protection Agency in developing EIA sector guidelines and conducted training in their application.
• Researched and compiled lessons from other Asian countries that could help ensure the organization and functions of Afghanistan’s new Department of Environment were well thought-out. We also conducted training in environmental assessments and environmentally sound design.

Cadmus also aids the professional development of promising young environmental assessment practitioners in Africa who, under the watchful eyes of mentors, work as members of professional EIA teams or receive other applied training for 2 – 6 months.
