Facilitated Study Series: LEED AP Exam Preparation

The demand is rising for individuals savvy in navigating and advising on the implementation process of LEED—Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design—certification. The title of LEED AP designates those individuals knowledgeable in the LEED rating system. Cadmus brings its experience as LEED consultants, members of USGBC’s certification review team, and developers and implementers of national training for clients such as the U.S. EPA, to learning audiences preparing for the LEED AP exam. Cadmus is also an approved Education Provider of the USGBC.

The goal of the Facilitated Study Series is to supplement individual preparation to successfully complete the LEED AP exam on the New Construction and Major Renovations (NC), Existing Buildings (EB), or Commercial Interiors (CI) rating system. This instructor-led, interactive course will benefit any professional committed to environmentally sustainable buildings, such as architects, engineers, building owners, property managers, contractors, consultants, and real estate professionals.

Course participants receive a review of the LEED Reference Guide and LEED project process, learning activities and project scenarios to emphasize exam concepts, tips and tools for effectively remembering key exam components, and a complete study checklist. This course is available as a full-day or multi-day workshop. The multi-day workshops allow time for discussion, practice and knowledge application, and are recommended for professionals seeking accreditation through a facilitated study experience.

Project Example: Exam Prep for the USGBC National Capital Region Chapter

Legislation calling for LEED certification is popping up all over the Washington, DC metropolitan area. As a result, the local chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the National Capital Region (NCR) Chapter, began receiving inquiries from its members about courses geared toward preparation for the LEED Accredited Professional (AP) exam.

The Challenge

Although one option for the chapter would have been to host more one-day LEED Technical Review Workshops provided by the USGBC, the NCR Chapter wanted to ensure that its members received high-quality instruction that would help participants focus explicitly on preparing for the LEED AP exam. The chapter also strongly felt that a study group effort would be most beneficial to its members to keep individual participants motivated and advancing toward professional accreditation.

Our Approach

Cadmus engaged the chapter with the goal of facilitating its study groups through preparation for any of the three versions of the LEED AP exam: New Construction, Existing Buildings, and Commercial Interiors. We worked with the chapter to craft a 5-week program that meets for two hours each week. This schedule allows time for the course participants to read and digest the material between sessions, returning each week with questions and ready to learn more. Additionally, in partnering with Cadmus, the chapter could be assured that participants would have a point of contact to answer their questions between sessions, thus clarifying points for understanding and removing the barriers to successful study.

Our Success

Cadmus worked with the chapter to meet the needs of the learning audiences regarding LEED AP exam preparation. Through our Facilitated Study Series, the LEED AP exam preparation courses that Cadmus developed for review and approval under the USGBC’s Education Provider Program, we capitalize on the momentum that comes with group effort. In so doing, the NCR Chapter, through Cadmus instructors and courses, has helped dozens of architects, engineers, contractors, interior designers, local government staff, real estate professionals and others successfully complete the exam and earn LEED professional accreditation.

“Cadmus’ Green Building team is helping the NCR Chapter to meet the educational needs of our members. I’m often at chapter events and a member will come up to me and tell me of his or her positive experience with the study group. I continually receive praise about the instructors and course. Cadmus has exceeded my expectations.” Tom Mawson, USGBC NCR Chapter Executive Director
