This win will position Cadmus for future work in water quality trading, a growing area in which the company has a keen interest. Many of the approaches developed under this project are expected to be used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in similar projects across the country in coming years.

Several subcontractors and consultants also will participate in the project.

Cadmus Will Aid Community Group at Superfund Site in California

(June 4, 2007) — Cadmus will provide the San Gabriel Valley Oversight Group in Alhambra, California, with technical advisory and outreach services related to activities and issues at the San Gabriel Valley Area 3 Superfund site under a new contract worth close to $50,000. The funds for the project will come from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) program.

The San Gabriel Basin aquifer provides approximately 90 percent of the drinking water for more than 1 million people living in the San Gabriel Valley. Widespread pollution of groundwater by industrial chemicals—particularly volatile organic compounds  such as trichloroethene, perchloroethylene, and carbon tetrachloride—prompted EPA in 1984 to add four areas of the San Gabriel Valley to the National Priorities List (also known as the Superfund list) of the country’s most hazardous waste sites. Cadmus’ work will focus on remedial activities at the Area 3 Superfund site.

This is the seventh project Cadmus has won to provide technical advisory services to TAG recipients.

Cadmus Wins Sole Source Award to Prepare Nanotech Case Studies for EPA

(May 29, 2007) — Cadmus will develop at least three nanotechnology case studies for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use in developing a risk research strategy for nanomaterials under a recent sole source award. The work will be performed for the National Center for Environmental Assessment, which is part of the EPA Office of Research and Development.

The case studies are expected to cover two classes of nanomaterials—titanium dioxide and single-wall carbon nanotubes—that could be released into the environment as primary and secondary products or contaminants. Each case study will run about 20 to 30 pages in length and will describe the product life cycle of each nanomaterial including feedstocks, manufacturing, distribution, storage, use, and disposal or reuse. They also will consider environmental fate and transport processes pertaining to primary and secondary contaminants associated with environmental releases or emissions at each stage of the life cycle. And, as much as possible, they will include information on potential exposures to biota and to people, along with information on ecological and human health effects.

Besides research and writing the case studies, Cadmus will help EPA make final decisions on the nanotechnology applications to be covered. We also will help the Agency track and respond to comments on the draft case studies from as many as 150 peer consultants.
